Rose Kennedy Greenway

An amazing project in Boston nicknamed the 'Big Dig' completed in December 2007 (9 years over schedule!) put Boston's Central Artery - Interstate 93 - underground. The old elevated freeway was removed and the space turned into Rose Kennedy Greenway, a series of parks...

The project had many major problems: It went way over schedule, over budget, 4 people died (partly due to dodgy material use).  But, done properly, I can't help but feel this is such a beautiful idea that a previous mass of concrete road can be turned into an urban oasis.

It makes me wonder if we could put all roads underground?  However it most likely wouldn't be safe and the experience of driving would be ruined.

I heard about this project whilst in Boston and even took the underground I-93 to the airport and back. Unfortunately I didn't get to experience the parks above for myself but here are some pictures I found:

Starting to Paint Again...

Random eye in watercolour

Painting the first page of my journal:

Done.  Like the colours; started trying to stay true to the photo I had but the colours were too dull, so instead i went for a pop art feel with brights and emphasis on primaries.  Not totally happy with the composition (boat needs to go further left?) but over all good start for the first page I think :)

Light Painting Music Videos

All India Radio - 'Rippled'.  Music Video by Oh Yeah Wow

This stunning music video was created using a technique called light painting.  Each frame is made by taking a long exposure photo while the animator uses a torch to draw his line/character in the air, a painstaking process that took over 6 months.  I think the video complements the music perfectly in a surreal and beautiful way.  If you look closely you can see the ghostly outlines of the animators.

Below is another of Oh Yeah Wow's collaborations with All India Music made three years before 'Rippled' called 'Lucky':

This is an A1 dawing/painting for my landscape architecture course about a village in Lancashire called Rivington.  I wanted to do it in the style of an old fashioned/Lord of the Rings style map to reflect the rich history of the place with some sites dating back to the Bronze Age.  The area it also one of Outstanding Natural Beauty and marked as an important bird habitat by the RSPB; therefore I have included illustrations of some of the wildlife that can be found there.

(The parts coloured green mark areas of proposed change to vegetation and the paths painted in yellow are new proposed walking routes)

'The Shining One' Commissioned Painting - Summer 2011

My first commission which has been named 'The Shining One' by its new owner.  It is also my first oil painting and first real attempt at painting a horse to this level of detail.
